Outcome: Proved

Penalty: Apprentice Jockey Temyia Taiaroa was suspended for 4 days

Facts:

Apprentice Jockey Temyia Taiaroa admitted a charge that she rode carelessly, allowing her mount to shift in near the 1500 metre mark when not clear of three other horses.

The available films were shown and commented on. They showed Miss Taiaroa allowing her mount to move inwards on the point of the bend, placing the three horses on her inside under pressure, causing their Jockeys to take hold.

Decision:

As the charge was admitted, it was deemed proved.

Submissions for Penalty:

Miss Taiaroa had nothing to add but Riding Master K Clapperton indicated that she thought it was a 50/50 call whether a charge should be laid, as the incident happened on the point of the bend and the horse’s  natural movement was inwards. She believed the incident could be classed at the lower end of the scale.

Stipendiary Steward B Jones concurred the incident was in the low range but three other horses were inconvenienced.  He stated that Miss Taiaroa has had 209 rides in the 12 month period and had not been  charged under this Rule.

Reasons for Penalty:

A deferment was asked for and agreed upon. While agreeing that the incident could be classed in the low range, three horses were affected in the incident.  Miss Taiaroa’s record under this Rule was very good and along with her admittance of the breach, meant that a reduction of one day off the Guidelines was deemed appropriate.

Conclusion:

A four-day suspension was imposed, beginning after the completion of racing on Saturday 17 December 2022 and ending after the completion of racing on Saturday 24 December 2022.
