Outcome: Proved

Penalty: Jockey Corey Campbell is suspended for 4 days

Mr Oatham alleged that Mr Campbell in Race 1, rode carelessly by shifting ground inwards passing the 250 metres when not sufficiently clear of LUGGATE LAD.

Miss Haley demonstrated on the videos that Mr Campbell was racing 3 out behind the leading horses and, when going for a gap near the 250 metres, he shifted inwards. In so doing, he came into the line of Mr Subramaniam, who was also looking for the gap. Mr Subramaniam shifted inwards and checked Mr Callaway, who was racing to his inside on the rail. Mr Campbell was a bare length clear when he shifted.

Mr Oatham said the run Mr Campbell had taken, was Mr Subramaniam’s and a flow on effect was that Mr Callaway was checked.

Mr Campbell agreed he had shifted in when not clear of Mr Subramaniam, but he believed Mr Subramaniam could have taken hold of his mount, rather than checking Mr Callaway.

Decision

As Mr Campbell has admitted the breach, it is found to be proved.

Submissions as to Penalty

Mr Oatham produced the Respondent’s record. This was Mr Campbell’s second breach of the Careless Riding Rule in the past 12 months. He described this record as very good. He said Mr Campbell was a busy South Island Rider who had had 352 rides in that time. He assessed the breach as low end.

Mr Campbell stated he wished the suspension to commence after Riccarton on 4 May.

Reasons for Penalty

Mr Campbell has shifted ground inwards when not clear of Mr Subramaniam, who has also shifted inwards checking Mr Callaway. This is his second breach of the Careless Riding Rule in the past 12 months. It is a low range breach and from a 5-day starting point, there is a one-day reduction for admission of the breach and good record.

Conclusion

Mr Campbell is suspended from the end of racing on 4 May, up to and including 10 May 2024. This is 4 national riding days.
