Outcome: Proved

Penalty: Junior Driver Alana Cameron is suspended for 3 days

EVIDENCE:

Following the running of Race 7, Stipendiary Steward Miss Maja Szukiel presented an Information alleging a breach of Rule 869(2) by Junior Driver Alana Cameron.

Miss Cameron stated she was conversant with the Rule, the Charge, and confirmed her admission of the breach. Miss Cameron was comfortable without a Senior Horseperson assisting at the hearing.

Miss Szukiel played the final straight video and identified Miss Cameron driving the favourite for the race, JOHN STEWART, and leading the field at approximately the 400m.

Miss Szukiel pointed to Miss Cameron use her whip on at least 10 occasions in an uncompliant manner, engaging her shoulder and elbow, for the first 150m of the straight and continued to breach the Whip Regulations many times thereafter.

Miss Cameron said her breach was not as serious as the Stewards have projected.

DECISION:

The Respondent having admitted the breach, it was deemed to be proved.

SUBMISSIONS FOR PENALTY:

Miss Szukiel said Miss Cameron was previously spoken to in regard to her whip use and received a warning for the same. She said the Stewards view this breach as high level, prolonged use, in which Miss Cameron did not return to a compliant style.

Miss Cameron stated she would begin any proposed suspension immediately.

REASONS FOR PENALTY:

The Penalty Guidelines provide for a first offence, a 3-day suspension for a high-level breach of the Rule, which this certainly is.

The Adjudicative Committee considered an uplift of Penalty, however, Miss Cameron has freely conceded her mistake, her first breach, and given her status as a Junior Driver, finds a 3-day suspension is appropriate in the circumstances of this case.

CONCLUSION:

Junior Driver Miss Alana Cameron is suspended from the conclusion of racing today, up to and including racing on 25 February 2026. Meetings encompassing this suspension are NZMTC on 19 February, Ashburton TC on 22 February and NZMTC on 25 February 2026.
