Outcome: Proved
Penalty: Apprentice Jockey Ace Lawson-Carroll is suspended for 5 days
FACTS
Apprentice Jockey Ace Lawson-Carroll, assisted by Riding Mentor K Clapperton, admitted a breach of the Careless Riding Rule in that he allowed his mount LOVE JANIE, to shift inwards when not sufficiently clear of THE SCUNNER, which was checked, losing ground passing the 50 metre mark.
EVIDENCE
The films of the incident were shown and Stipendiary Steward N Goodwin pointed out that in looking for a run in the approach to the line, Ace Lawson-Carroll angled his mount into a gap after changing ground, making contact with Jockey K Hercock’s mount THE SCUNNER, causing that Jockey to take hold. There was slight inwards movement from a number of horses on LOVE JANIE’S outside, which may have contributed in a minor way to the incident. Being close to the finish, a number of horses were racing in tight quarters. The incident was classed at the lower end of the scale by the Stewards.
Jockey Ace Lawson-Carroll indicated that to get a run, he had to change ground and in doing so, his mount did make contact with the horse on his inside, but believed there was contributing slight movement from a number of other horses.
Riding Mentor K Clapperton concurred there were slight contributing factors in the incident from a number of horses.
DECISION
As the charge was admitted, it was deemed proved.
SUBMISSIONS ON PENALTY
Stipendiary Steward N Goodwin indicated that Ace Lawson-Carroll was a busy sought after Rider. He has 4 suspensions this calendar year, the last being 25 November 2023, when a 7 day suspension was imposed. He asked, as per the Guidelines, for a period of suspension.
Jockey Ace Lawson-Carroll asked for a deferment until after racing on Friday the 3rd of May.
REASONS FOR PENALTY
Although the Stewards viewed the incident at the lower end of the scale, the Adjudicative Committee felt it fell midway between low and mid range. A sharp bump was accorded to the affected horse, causing the Jockey to take hold.
In arriving at a penalty, Jockey Ace Lawson-Carroll’s record was taken into account, along with his admittance of the breach.
A starting point of a 6 day penalty was reduced by one day, because of the mitigating factors and his request for a deferment was agreed to.
CONCLUSION
Jockey Ace Lawson-Carroll was suspended for 5 days. The days being after the completion of racing on Friday 3rd of May, until the completion of racing on Friday 10th of May.
