Outcome: Proved

Penalty: Jockey Jonathan Riddell is suspended for 5 NR days

Background:

Following the running of Race 3, the ‘Inhouse Construction 1400’ an Information was lodged alleging a breach of Rule 638(1)(d). Details are as follows:

‘in that he allowed his mount “QACENTINA” to shift outwards when not fully clear of “OUR AKASHINGA” which was crowded and checked near the 250 metres’.

Rule 638(1)(d) provides:

A Rider shall not ride a horse in a manner which the Adjudicative Committee considers to be careless.

The Respondent confirmed to the Adjudicative Committee that he understood the Rule and admitted the breach.

Evidence:

Using available film, Stewards identified the incident and horses involved. Turning into the home straight, QACENTINA was against the fence approximately 2 lengths behind JUS WING IT, who had SHARE POWER to its outside. The Respondent is seen to roll away from the fence, to go around the leading horses. In doing so, he is insufficiently clear of OUR AKASHINGA, who was momentarily checked.  QACENTINA won the event. When asked, the Respondent noted that he felt his mount was going well enough to make the move.

Decision:

As the Respondent admitted the breach, it is found to be proved.

Submissions as to Penalty:

Stewards outlined the Respondent’s record as it relates to any breach of this Rule within the twelve month careless riding ‘reference’ period. There was one previous breach noted, that being at the Feilding JC Meeting at Awapuni Racecourse on 25 May 2025. Same resulted in a 3 day suspension. Stewards confirmed that Mr Riddell has had 350 mounts within the twelve month period. Stewards contended that the breach sat ‘low range’. Mr Riddell advised that any suspension imposed could take effect immediately ie: upon close of racing on 22 June 2025.

Reasons for Penalty:

Available film did, to the satisfaction of the Adjudicative Committee, identify the breach. The Respondent was insufficiently clear when moving out into that gap, to which OUR AKASHINGA was looking to move. The check, although momentary, did materially affect the chances of OUR AKASHINGA. After due consideration, the Adjudicative Committee determined the breach to sit low to mid range. Referenced to the current NZTR Guide, a 6 day suspension was set as the starting point, with resultant penalty reduced 1 day to reflect the Respondent’s commendable record.

Conclusion:

The Respondent’s Licence to ride in races is suspended for 5 national riding days, from the close of racing on 22 June 2025, up to and including racing on 2 July 2025.
